Sapa Building Systems has added to its extensive portfolio of school projects with the completion of a four-year long contract at Great Barr School in Birmingham, valued in excess of £2m.

Refurbishment at the school, the largest in the country with more than 2,400 pupils, was carried out in carefully planned phases to ensure minimum disruption to classes.

Whilst most school refurbishment is traditionally carried out during holiday periods only, the scale of the Great Barr project was such that installation work continued throughout the term-time, providing a stern test for the logistical skills of fabricator and installer QG Architectural Systems.

The school, set in extensive grounds, benefits from a range of facilities including gymnasium, sports hall, Technology Centre and playing fields as well as incorporating a sixth-form centre. Throughout the school, existing glazing was replaced with fully suited Proframe 325 windows, Gridframe curtain walling and Stormframe High Performance entrance doors. The result is a low maintenance, high performance glazed façade that provides high levels of thermal insulation and simple operation.

The Education Specialist

Sapa Building Systems' extensive range of windows, doors, curtain walling and low rise Window Wall provides the complete solution for the education sector, whether refurbishing existing premises or as part of a new development.

From primary schools to universities, our experience and the design flexibility offered by our ranges ensures the optimum solution including safety conscious hardware to restrict window openings and anti-finger trap door styles to prevent accidents.

With systems such as Dualframe windows designed specifically for this sector and support from our field-based team of project consultants, we have done our homework to ensure we can pass the most stringent of examinations.

Technical Aspects
The extensive glazing requirements of the Great Barr project called for fully suited, colour matched doors, windows and curtain walling. From the original single glazed fenestration, the buildings not only look better, but are helping the school to make considerable savings in their heating costs.
